the Kanunda and Emu Flat Railway

The shearing shed which is designed to disguise the hole in the backdrop through which the Myrtle Springs trains enter the layout has hadsome paint applied to it this month.

The up Myrtle Springs goods appears from behind Arrowsmith and sons merino stud shearing shed.

Millie the, Jack Russel terrier, and enthusiastic greeter of everyone as they arrive, was an apology last night because she had just returned from five days in vet hospital with a bad case of pancreatitis. My wife brought her down for a short time to the train room because she thought that she belongs there on operating nights and she did manage to wag her tail to welcome everybody.
The crew last night consisted of road crew 1 David, road crew 2 Rod, Kanunda Yard master John P, Hostler Peter S, controller myself and my grandson Tom railway photographer.
Trains started off well. But the down Emu Flat passenger departed Cooper late because it’s driver read the wrong time off the timetable.
Due to going up and down to the vets and other things I was unable to put much time into preparation for this operating session. So it was not much of a surprise when 847 rain erratically. Dirty wheels I thought, but it kept causing shorts each time it negotiated a turnout. So on arrival at Kanunda 847 was sent away into a siding. The hostler brought train-o-rama 858 up from Cooper to Kanunda to take the Myrtle Springs goods back later in the shift. I cleaned 847’s wheels this morning and it ran faultlessly.

Gremlins were also present when C501 headed the Adelaide super-freighter. For some reason there was a momentary short for every couple of meters C501 ran. Because C501 has a sound decoder the period stopped was accentuated because of the start up time the sound needs. I ran C501 this morning on the same train with no problem so that is still a mystery.

John P struggled a little as Kanunda YM. The yard seemed to get clogged up for him. A suggestion for that is to use all available tracks to store cars. The refuge, for instance, is only used by the over-length Mt Gambier goods, first and last train to be run so cars can be stored there between those times. Also cars can be stored in the head shunt. However John did well to only spot one car incorrectly, empty open wagon NOBX 89555 was sent to the crane at Kanunda while AOGY 602 with a load of machinery for Kanunda was sent to Myrtle Springs.
When the Kanunda yard gets behind it slows down all the subsequent trains, this along with erratically running 847 and C501 put most trains late.
The session was called to a close at 10.30 pm when the Up Mt Gambier goods arrived at Kanunda over half an hour later than usual.
Once again Millie was missed at Coffee and cake time where she normally performs vacuuming duties.
