Sept 2022 operating session

THE TUESDAY NIGHT MAIL TRAIN

OPERATING SESSION

TUESDAY SEPT 27 ON THE KANUNDA & EMU FLAT RAILWAY

Thanks to Rod and Paul who came along, and who ,with myself, made a three man crew for this session.  Rod was the Kanunda yard master and Paul and myself road crews.

We began on time and finished the session in almost exactly two hours. Most trains ran well. 858, the train o rama 830 class, would only run very slow for Paul until I turned the sound on then it ran normally. The other strange one was 847, the Trax 830 with Main West mechanism, which would only run very slow while at Kanunda then when I got round to Cooper to shunt it began running normally.

We did have problems with some of the 5 pin DIN sockets. They are over 20 years old now and some are quite loose. I have been replacing them with sockets from the old Adelaide Model Railroaders Islington layout and they have not been lasting. I shall buy some brand new ones and try them to see if I can get better results.

Any way the three of us enjoyed a relaxed operating session otherwise.

Above: 830 class number 842 shunting the up Myrtle Springs goods at Wooldowie. All trains headed toward Cooper (Adelaide) are considered up trains. The up Myrtle Springs goods only goes as far as Kanunda. Any loading for beyond Kanunda will be forwarded on in either the up Roadside goods or the up Mt Gambier goods.
Above: 503 the Kanunda shunt engine looks to be about to pick up a V-Line van from the goods shed. The yard master seems to be fully equipped with torch and skewer.
Above: Another 830 class, this time 846, is in charge of the down Emu Flat passenger train as it stops briefly at Jimba Jimba Junction.
Above: The down Overland hurries through Emu Flat behind green 930 class 950 and red 930, 937. This train is all 1980s Lima but 950 has a Fiddle Yard mechanism while 937 is un-powered.
Above: Red 930 class Alcos 942 and 961 depart Cooper on a down engine and van movement. They will proceed to Emu Flat where they will pick up loaded grain hoppers before departing as the up grainy, picking up more hoppers at Wooldowie and Kanunda.
Above: 961 and 942 are about to pick up another cut of AHGX hoppers at the Wooldowie silos.
Above: Small Alco 842 has arrived, B end forward, at Wooldowie with the down Myrtle Springs goods. It will set out the first two wagons here, the RX reefer at Con’s choice fruit packing shed and the green AOGY open wagon at the goods crane.

After the session finished at about 9.30pm the three of us sat down for a cuppa and ginger cake.
