APRIL 2023 Operating session

THE TUESDAY NIGHT MAIL TRAIN

FOR TUESDAY APRIL 11 ON THE KANUNDA & EMU FLAT RAILWAY

WORKING ON THE K&EFR

I have finally solved the problems that have been keeping Blue VR C501 off the K&EFR. I found that all the gears had split and after replacing them with “black gears” from Infront models C501 is running once again.

After some time spent on club projects I am finally getting something done for the K&EFR. I am going to replace the english looking goods shed at Wooldowie with something more South Aussie. I have begun building a bespoke goods shed for Wooldowie. One something like the goods shed at Keith in the south east. It will be made of beer carton card covered in BGB corrugated card.

THE SESSION

Rod took his usual position as Kanunda yard master while Tony and I were the road crews. With only the three of us we left, the Adelaide Jet, Melbourne Jet, down Overland and the tank train out of the sequence. Starting on time the down Mt Gambier goods and Overland ran on time so did the Emu Flat passenger and the Adelaide super freighter. Having the road crews shunt the transfer goods and the roadside goods, normally shunted by the Hostler, took it’s toll leaving the up Mt Gambier goods to depart Foster at 1403 instead of the advertised 1334. I landed the Roadside goods, a job I love. I set out three wagons at Kanunda and picked up two. Then travelled to Wooldowie to set out a van at the goods shed and all was well. When I got to Emu Flat I could not find van AFLY 234 in my consist. It was supposed to have bags of flour from Laucke Mills Kanunda to be picked up by the Emu Flat bakery at the goods shed. The baker had to change plans from baking hot cross buns to baking vanilla slices so as not to run out of flour. Rumor has it that the towns folk were pleased to have vanilla slice because the baker had been turning out hot cross buns since new years day and everyone was thoroughly sick of them. On closer inspection of the train I saw I had van ALGX 32a loaded with groceries for the Kanunda IGA. ALGX 32a had a ride from Kanunda to Foster and back. I hope the IGA did not have to wait too long for it’s supplies. AFLY 234 will be on tomorrows train now. My fault, I did not check the lading before leaving Kanunda.

All trains ran well making for an enjoyable operating session. Having got started on time we were able to sit down and enjoy our cake and tea or coffee before 2200.

Cheers Ken.
